Key Takeaways
The wait is over – when we founded Ovy two years ago, we had one goal: to make cycle tracking for women simpler and, above all, safer, using the smartphone together with a specially developed Bluetooth basal thermometer that transfers the temperature automatically every day.
Said and done. After many ups and downs, prototypes that turned out sometimes better and sometimes worse, and countless app testings, our Bluetooth basal thermometer has finally been on the market since last week.
Developing Hardware as a Start-up
When we started, we had a clear idea of what the Ovy Bluetooth basal thermometer needed to do, but little idea of what it would mean to bring a medical device to market. So, we looked for the best partners with expertise in this field.
In collaboration with gynecologists, experts in natural family planning, and our investor Beurer, whom we found to be the ideal partner for developing our hardware, we moved from production in Ulm to Shanghai. Two years and many prototypes later, we finally made it – and are now holding our Ovy hero product in our hands: a Bluetooth basal thermometer that transmits temperature automatically.
The Ovy Bluetooth Basal Thermometer at a Glance
In addition to our high standards for design, there were three features we didn’t want to compromise on:
-
Bluetooth transfer of the measured temperature happens in the background after measurement, without the app needing to be opened. (The app does need to be running in the background.)
-
Users can choose in the app whether the thermometer vibrates, beeps quietly, or remains silent at the end of measurement. This can be set in the thermometer settings once the thermometer is paired.
-
Three minutes of measurement time – exactly as the guidelines require.
Okay – and a fourth, fifth, and sixth point we also couldn’t do without …
-
A battery that lasts for over 60 measurements – of course, a USB charging cable is included.
-
A flexible probe, so the thermometer can be used both orally under the tongue and vaginally.
-
An illuminated temperature display, so you can read it in the dark without waking your partner.
The Bluetooth basal thermometer is paired once with the app by entering a six-digit passkey. Et voilà – the thermometer is ready for daily morning measurement. If you want to transfer the temperature manually at a later time, that’s also possible.
The algorithm in the Ovy app evaluates the data using the symptothermal method – with the addition that the app makes predictions about the cycle. Based on the data, Ovy calculates ovulation day, fertile days, and the next period. Ovy supports women and couples both in achieving pregnancy and in natural cycle tracking.
What’s Next?
Our mission is to build a global female care brand that women trust. We want to help women make the right decisions about their reproductive health based on data. With two Ovy apps – one for her and one for him – our Ovy product family covering the different phases of the cycle, and a community of nearly 100,000 Ovy users, we are getting closer to achieving our goal every day.
